While browsing Craiglist postings around my area, I came across someone in Vermont selling their 2006 "3rd Generation Limited" for $46,998. It has 2,145 miles.

That's kind of "optimistic pricing", isn't it? Has ANY collector Miata sold for a price like that? Maybe a very early 1990 or a perfect 1993 LE is way up there, but a 2006?

I have no interest in this car, other than curiosity about what is happening with Miata prices.

Could the price be a typo? Maybe they meant $16,998, not $46,998?
I don't really think so, because the seller says the car is "for the special occasion or only to touch and look at." (With phrasing like that, it seems more "50 Shades of Grey" than Velocity Red.)

I suppose it could be there, but this particular "For Sale" ad shouldn't be considered as if it were hard data supporting appropriate pricing of this particular model. If I were looking for an '06 LE, I wouldn't want this car distorting the value judgements in any way. (If I already owned an '06 LE, I'd be publicizing this bizarre valuation everywhere I could.)

I thought the extremely wacky asking price pushed this particular car into the pricing stratosphere where only collectors can breathe the rare (pun) air!

But wait. . . there's more. . . This car has not yet been snapped up by a savvy collector!

I still think "pacomutt" supplied the only serious answer for why someone SHOULD price any car this crazy high. It's a lesson in how to "sell" a cherished asset with no chance of it actually being sold. I may use this not-really-for-sale selling method in the future when I want to keep both an asset and my marriage.

Unfortunately, this seller still seems to believe he has fairly priced his car. The current Craigslist ad has a new line about no comparable car being found on an Edmunds.com search.
This may someone trying to recover their costs after having spent a grotesque amount of money to buy the car in the first place.
Or is it an "X-Files" advertisem*nt which is really from 2036?

Is this that light blue color they offered? If so that's gotta be worth a $500 premium at least!

I like the Mazda Special Edition mentality: make a special edition limited production color/option every year. And then when everyone's car is special, no one's is. ;)

How many of you are buyers if the price is even realistic? The market will sort this guy out. He'll either lower the price until it is realistic and attracts a buyer or he'll hang onto it. Obviously $47k is unrealistic and it sounds like $18,9 is too but who cares? It's his car and he wants to make himself feel good. Let him ask whatever he wants. Crazy can't be reasoned with.

The whole point of this section is to discuss pricing of vehicles seen in the wild. In this case, the owner just provided entertainment value with his initial pricing/lack of a good advertisem*nt.

Maybe it's just a young punk drift-boy that's having fun with everyone that's jealous that they can't drive the wheels and dented-rusted-slammed fenders off of their ashtray of an abused and neglected Miata?? :) :)
