Who becomes Jarl of Windhelm if Ulfric dies? ›

After completing the quest "Reunification of Skyrim," Brunwulf Free-Winter will become Jarl of Windhelm, whereupon he will give the Dragonborn the option to become a Thane of Eastmarch.

Become Thane of Windhelm

The option to become Thane will only become avaliable from Ulfric after you have liberated Falkreath. If you joined the imperials, you can only become thane when you've completed the imperial's Civil War quest line. The objectives you need to complete here are as simple as is Morthal.

How to become Thane of Windhelm without joining the Civil War? You need to finish the quest blood on ice. The steward will then direct you to the jarl. In turn, will ask that you'll help 5 people then you're the thane.

A Stormcloak victory in the civil war leads to Ulfric becoming High King of Skyrim and declaring the country's independence. This leaves the Tamrielic Empire with only the Cyrodiil and High Rock territories, alongside several smaller provinces.

You can get the house in the rival city after completing the civil war storyline and helping one faction take over the other city. Thus it's possible to get the house by joining the imperials and defeating the stormcloaks.

It's possible to be the thane of every hold simultaneously.
